Episode Transcript
[00:00:00] Hello, my name is Sally Moriarty-Flask. Welcome to a very special bonus presentation for: From His Word to Our Hearts, my weekly Bible study podcast.
You have heard the music that opens and closes the show every week… what you don't know is that I woke up with the chorus for that song in my head several years ago. I asked my son Jimmy to help me turn the few notes of that simple melody into a song and what he came up with is the theme song you hear at the beginning and end of each episode.
When we decided to release the bonus episodes for Holy Thursday and Good Friday this year, we also decided to have a go at creating a full version of the song, including lyrics. That is what we are premiering today.
Jimmy and I recorded the vocal tracks - I am singing melody; he is singing harmony.
This song was originally intended for use during the foot washing portion of a Holy Thursday Mass. All of the lyrics for the song are quotes from my favorite Gospel, the Gospel of John. The lyrics for the chorus come from the foot washing at the Last Supper; the verses are all based on five of the seven “I AM” statements of Jesus as recorded in John's Gospel.
The song is simply titled: I AM, a Song of the Lord's Promises.
We're so grateful to be able to share this with you. Thank you for being part of this special release and may your Triduum be filled with peace and blessings.
[00:01:43] CHORUS: You call me teacher and master, and rightly so, for indeed I am. I have left a model for you. Now you must do as I have done for you.
Verse 1:
I am the way, the truth, the life, says the Lord.
He who receives me
receives him who sent me.
I dwell with you.
I go to prepare a place for you,
and I will take you back to myself.
CHORUS: You call me teacher and master, and rightly so, for indeed I am. I have left a model for you. Now you must do as I have done for you.
Verse 2:
I am the bread of life, the living bread, says the Lord.
He who comes to me
will never hunger,
nor will he thirst.
My words will abide always in you
and all you ask in my name you shall have.
CHORUS: You call me teacher and master, and rightly so, for indeed I am. I have left a model for you. Now you must do as I have done for you.
Verse 3:
I am the resurrection and the life, says the Lord.
Love one another
as I have loved.
This I command.
No one has greater love than this
to lay down your life for a friend.
CHORUS: You call me teacher and master, and rightly so, for indeed I am. I have left a model for you. Now you must do as I have done for you.
Verse 4:
I am the light of the world, says the Lord.
He who walks with me
will not have darkness,
but will have light.
You will face hardship for my sake.
Take courage, I have conquered the world.
CHORUS: You call me teacher and master, and rightly so, for indeed I am. I have left a model for you. Now you must do as I have done for you.
Verse 5:
I am the good shepherd of the flock, says the Lord.
I know my own sheep,
and my sheep know
they hear my voice.
I lay down my life for the sheep
and give them life eternal with me.
CHORUS: You call me teacher and master, and rightly so, for indeed I am. I have left a model for you. Now you must do as I have done for you.
